5 iPhone questions for Airtel,Vodafone !

Apple's 3G iPhone is set to be launched in Inida on Firday August 22, within a month of the global launch. Though Apple has partnered with only one mobile operator per country,India is one of only three countries (Italy and Australia being the other two) to have multiple operators-Airtel and Vodafone.

Apple may have squeezed its partner operator in nearly every developed country, but in India the operators have so far held all the aces. It is not going to be smooth sailing though as the iPhone's India launch will bring a whole new set of challenge to the table. Abhimanyu Radhakrishnan has five questions for Airtel and Vodafone regarding the impending iPhone services ...

Go for MID: It's cheaper and faster than 3G.

3G mobile services, to be launched in India on August 22, is set to have serious competition. The reason is simple: if you are looking for high quality video streaming of movies and want to play multiplayer on-line games, it's not 3G services alone you need to look at.

All you will have to do is to pay around Rs. 12,000 to Rs. 15,000 for a mobile internet device with a screen like your PDA and get speeds, which are three times faster than what was promised by 3G mobile operators.

Which companies got 3G License in India?

3G spectrum has been provided to GSM players like Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limites, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Essar (then Hutch) to carry out an interface check on a non-commercial basis ahead of the start of 3G mobile services.

As per the guideline, any licensed telecom operator can bid for 3G spectrum and the radio waves will be auctioned in 5-10 blocks depending on the availability. Each successful bidder will be allocated only one block in a service area.

Spectrum will be auctioned in the 450 Mhz, 800 Mhz band for EVDO (for CDMA players) and in 1900 band when it is available.

All about 3G and what it means for you !

There is no firm date set for the auction of 3G spectrum, but it is likely to take place before February 2009 since the government may need the money to keep its deficit within control; current estimates put the initial entry fee bids that the government will get at any where between 30,000 crore (Rs, 300 billion) and 40,000 crore (Rs,400 billion).

In that case, by about December 2009, India may get broadband-type internet speeds on mobile phones. That, in turn, will allow users to view movies on their mobile phones, conduct video telephony while on the move, and so on.
Users demand better and faster services, and as they start using high-end phones, they want more information, faster data access and multimedia services through their mobile phones. Only 3G technology provides this. So what is 3G spectrum all about? Read on. . .

What iPhone doesn't have !

iPhone has become revolution in phone world. The demand seems to be increasing with each passing day. And as every buyer would proudly wink and declare his iPhone status, the have nots will recoil and steel their resolve to acquire one. By now you would surely remember by heart what the iPhone has.But wait, do you also know what it does not have?We bring you a list of features that tells you what even the iconic iPhone doesn't have.......
  • However, the new iPhone offers nothing new in terms of looks. The 3G iPhone looks pretty much like its predecessors.
  • However, 3G iPhone disappoints with the same 2 megapixel camera and no video recording option and flash and optical zoom too missing.
  • Another sorely missed out features are multimedia messaging and voice dialing.
  • User replaceable battery and tactile feedback for the touchscreen, both have been given a miss in the new iPhone
  • Users were expecting a landscape keyboard, capability to cut and paste, expanded memory and additional Bluetooth profiles - which all too is missing.
  • There is no support for Adobe Flash in 3G iPhone.
  • This may be hard to digest. BlackBerry has it, Nokia has it, however, 3G iPhone lacks it.

Apple's iPhone 3G: Is it for you?

Apple products have always had an unusual charm to them. A lot of sophistication, elegance and refined taste ago into creating an Apple product during its design phase.Even though I'm far from being a big Apple fan, their products tend to leave a lasting impression.

This article revolves around the widely hyped iPhone, set to be launched in India by Vodafone and Bharti Airtel sometime later this year. There weren't too many iPhone competitors out there in 2007; at least not in the indian market but there were some available in international markets linke LG Prada,BlackBox, Meizu M8,Samsung F700 to name a few worthy competitors initially. However, you won't find any of the above mentioned so easily with legal retailers.

The HTC Touch Diamond, Samsung Omnia i900, Nokia E71 are the latest alternatives to the iPhone. Remember, these are handsets that offer a different solution and are not clones of the iPhone. The reason behind the usage of the term 'alternative' lies in the OS. Construction, aesthetics, connectivity, hardaware, etc are some of the differences that influence our choice. Manufactures in an effort to tackle competition, try to level the playing field by replicating the competing models' specifications.

This article aims at highlighting the key features of the iPhone while comparing it to similar alternative solutions using a different OS. The OS is the key feature that creates a different user experience and smart buyers pay attention to this feature because switching from one OS to another's not an easy task especially when you need to familiarize yourselves in order to unlock the handset's full potential.

So let's begin our journey into what the Apple iPhone is all about and which other phones can provide a similar experience.

3G iPhone's Asian party poopers!

The iPhone 3G, which Apple is billing as twice as fast and half as expensive as the debut model, will roll out in cities from Tokyo to Sydney coming Friday. The company is betting the new phone's third generation (3G) capabilities, such as faster Internet access and file transfer, will make the phone a hit. Like the first version, the new model also has an iPod built in.

However, will the 3G iPhone be as successful in Asia as it has been in US and Europe? According to analysts, the new iPhone faces several challenges in Asia that it will not have elsewhere.

Here's looking into what all may spoil Apple's party in Asia.

Can Nokia N78 3G replace the trusted N73 or N82?

Nokia recently launched the N78 smartphone aimed as an alternative to the already available successor of the N73, the N82. There has been a lot of confusion when it came to naming the true successor of the N73 ever since the announcement of the N78.

A successor to any aging and existing model has to perform better and offer more features. November 2007 saw the launch of the N82 which proved itself worthy as an N73 successor albeit at a slightly higher price.

Nokia has positioned the N78 in a similar way when the N73 took off in late 2006. Question is, does the N78 really have what it takes to replace the N73?

Under the hood, we have a 369Mhz Texas Instruments OMAP ARM11 processor with 96 MB of RAM running on an updated S60 3rd edition Symbian OS (rel 3.2) and with 76MB of usable storage ROM. This results in performance on par with the N82 when running resource hungry apps. Preinstalled along with the OS is the new Feature Pack 2, which is a first for an S60 smartphone. Visual enhancements such as extra GUI menu animations and customisable active stand-by screen layouts not only present an enormous amount of eye-candy but are also a treat, creating favourite applications shortcuts for easier navigation. You can customise menus with four view modes:

  • Standard mode 1
  • tandard mode 2
  • -Shaped mode
  • orseshoe mode

FP2 adds a new feature called Geo-Tracking which allows you to add geographical co-ordinates to photos. Overall, FP2 improves visuals and provides more fluid animations while ensuring performance does not take a hit. There are 4 preinstalled themes available:

  • Nseries 1
  • series 2
  • series 3
  • aze

You have the usual option of downloading and installing even more. Customisation is the highlight of all the recently released Nseries models. It even has a built-in speaker and an independent voice recognition system that can recognise a large bevy of user commands.

Beside all that,it is unable to copy a chunk of text and paste it into another application also Iphone does not support(MMS).

Seven biggest disappointments regarding Apple's new iPhone 3G:

    • Cost
    • Doesn't support Adobe's Flash
    • No replaceable batteries
    • No video recording
    • No cut-and-paste
    • No multimedia messaging service

Cell phones ' a health risk' for kids

An international team of researchers has warned parents to limit their children's use of mobile phones, after studying the effects of the devices on health. The team of researchers said that due to "Electromagnet" mobile phones should be considered a health risk.

During the study, researchers found that significant levels of electromagnetic radiation from the phones did penetrate the human body, and argued that until more research was done the gadgets should be considered dangerous.

In particular, researchers found that children's brains were more susceptible to the radiation than those of adults, and suggested parents to ban younger children from using the phones regularly.

Activate your iPhone within 30 days or face the consequences

A few days ago, there had been rumors that the AT&T and Apple are planning to have an in-store activation by the time the 3G iPhone is already out in the market. But that rumor no longer exists. However, the two companies are now doing their best and making preventive measures so that the 3G iPhone would not be taken advantage of. Apple and AT&T are very much aware that the opportunists would try to unlock the 3G iPhone and resell it so that other customers can use it with their current networks.

Apple and AT&T are making strict measures about the activation of the iPhone so that they can avoid future troubles. And if you are one of the thousands of people who are planning to queue at the subsidised iPhone, you have thirty days to activate the device either in an Apple or AT&T store. If you weren’t able to do so, you will pay a penalty which is also the same price of the subsidy itself. Moreover, the two companies are only limiting 3 3G iPhones for every customer.

If there are iPhone fanatics who are waiting for the device to be sold online, they just have to wait and see. As for now, one thing is clear. The 3G iPhone will be available on July 11 and the iPhones that you will see on Craigslists or in Ebay should not be bought.

Do you think it is better to use an iPhone over a BlackBerry?

The second generation iPhone is here. Apple Inc on Monday unveiled a second-generation iPhone, a sleek black unit with faster Internet access. The new iPhone will run on third-generation or 3G wireless network and includes satellite navigation capability. The iPhone software update is aimed at a business market that is currently hooked on BlackBerry devices made by Canada-based Research In Motion.

BlackBerry has for long been the best buy for busy executives on the move. Do you think iPhone is a better choice over BlackBerry? Is the new iPhone an improvement over the old one? Is there still something that you would have liked to see on the second generation iPhone but that has not featured this time?

    Apple Unveils New 3G iPhone

Almost after one year upending the mobile phone world with its first wireless handset, the iPhone . Apple launched second version of the device, the iPhone 3G. Introduced by Apple (AAPL) CEO Steve Jobs in a June 9 keynote address in San Francisco, the iPhone 3G will sell for $199 for an 8GB version and $299 for a 16GB version. The new prices represent a departure from a year ago when the first devices sold for $599 on the upper end. The iPhone 3G will be available in 22 countries beginning July 11, and will eventually be sold in 70 countries in all.

The new phone derives its name from the faster Internet downloads available on advanced, or third-generation (3G), wireless network . Jobs told the audience the new iPhone downloads Web pages as much as 36% faster than comparable phones from Nokia (NOK) and Palm (PALM). The new phone also sports a feature that lets users know their location using GPS satellites. Phones that run GPS technology are able to access an array of location-aware applications, including mapping within address books. Other improvements over the original device include improved audio quality on phone calls.

Nokia Nseries launches Nokia N78 in India

Nokia Nseries, the premium multimedia sub-brand of Nokia, has launched Nokia N78 in India. Nokia N78 ushers in a new era in convergence by taking a leap ahead from offering multiple experiences on one device, to actually merging experiences with each other, thus creating new, unexpected, interesting results. The highlight of the N78 is the ‘Location Tagger’ application, which automatically tags location data to the picture - allowing users to save pictures by date as well as by geographical coordinates. Additionally, the Nokia N78 enables consumers to take full advantage of a suite of Nokia services, including the Nokia Maps and integrated A-GPS. The Nokia N78 is expected to retail for approximately Rs. 19999. With its signature sleek black surface the Nokia N78 will be available in two stylish colors: cocoa brown and lagoon blue.

“The slim Nokia N78 fuses features in new ways,” says Vineet Taneja, Head-GTM, Nokia India. “It features location-tagging, which merges camera functionality and A-GPS to not only share pictures but also the places where they were taken. Users can now store all information about locations they visit using an image and share it online with the world. It also allows the fusion of music, camera and internet, enabling users to generate content right from the palms of their hands.”

Apple's 3G iPhone may hit US markets today

There's a murmur in the American market that the much-awaited 3G iPhone from Apple might be launched on Monday, June 9. The iPhone (the existing version) which hasn't officially hit the Indian markets is likely to be available in the country in September and may cost upwards of Rs 23,000. The Cupertino, California-based Apple Inc will be unveiling its World Wide Developers Conference on Monday in San Francisco; the same conference where last year Steve Jobs, CEO, Apple, announced the launch date of the iPhone. So what is special about the 3G iPhone? Well, for one, it has high speed download packet access that helps very fast downloads. This will be faster than what the EDGE network allows. Apple has recently introduced a new iPhone software developers' kit which enables third party software developers to develop software for the iPhone. The new phone's other features, however, remain a closely guarded secret.

The phone will, of course, have Internet-enabled multimedia, a multi-touch screen with a virtual keyboard.
